Virtual Produino is an experimental virtual production lighting system designed specifically for stop-motion animation.

Live-action virtual production often relies on massive LED volumes to provide both in-camera backgrounds and interactive environmental lighting. Stop-motion presents a different set of production realities. Backgrounds are already commonly handled through compositing, while the scale and number of miniature stages make large LED environments impractical for many productions.

Virtual Produino focuses on the aspect of virtual production that stop-motion can benefit from most: synchronized environmental light. By driving addressable RGBW LED panels in sync with Dragonframe, the system can generate animated color, reflections, atmospheric effects, and interactive lighting that evolve frame by frame with the shot.

Rather than reproducing live-action virtual production at miniature scale, the project explores how its core principles can be adapted into a more practical and scalable workflow for stop-motion production.

The current prototype uses Arduino-based controllers and addressable RGBW LED strips with frame-synchronized playback. Early development explored wireless image transfer, while current work is focused on higher-speed wired systems for improved reliability and production scalability.

Development is ongoing and the software is still considered experimental and in active progress.
