LIMNMEDIA - Diving Board Layout & Fitment

This stage goes back into layout and fitment for what I’ve been calling the “diving board”—the extension off the hinge block that carries the head assembly.

This part connects into the hinge block through the adapter plate, and at this point the challenge is not just making it fit, but making it fit around everything that’s already there.

Layout & Fitment

The hole layout here has to carefully avoid all of the existing holes from the hinge block and adapter plate.

There’s not much extra space, so each fastener location has to be thought through in relation to:

  • existing screw paths
  • tool access
  • assembly order

This is one of those areas where it’s easy to create conflicts if you rush it. So this step is mostly about slow layout, checking, and re-checking before committing to drilling.

Observations

A couple things show up right away:

  • The screws in this area are extremely close together
  • Some of the screw heads are nearly touching
  • It’s about as tight a fit as you can reasonably get
  • *

It works, but it definitely raises a question about whether this plate should be made from thicker material.

At the same time, I’m holding off on changing that for now.

Structural Thoughts

This “diving board” is going to carry the camera head, so there’s a good chance it will want to flex under load.

I’m already anticipating the need for a gusset to reinforce it, but I’m intentionally not adding that yet.

I want to see:

  • how much it actually flexes
  • where the stress shows up
  • whether reinforcement is really needed, and where
  • *

Context

This is another example of letting the system inform the design.

Instead of trying to predict everything up front (especially without access to parametric modeling or simulation tools like Inventor), the approach here is:

build it → observe it → adjust it

Why This Matters

Even though this is a small part, it sits at a critical junction:

  • hinge block
  • adapter plate
  • head mounting structure

Small layout decisions here can have a big impact on:

  • strength
  • serviceability
  • long-term reliability
